Layman scholarship to benefit students pursuing liberal arts

The Thomas Layman Memorial Scholarship was recently created with a major gift from the estate of Thomas Layman, and is being administered by the Holmes County Education Foundation (HCEF). Layman was originally from Mayfield Heights. He attended Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. from 1947 to 1949, and went on to receive a B.A. degree from Cleveland College of Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in 1951. He majored in English. Prior to his death, Layman resided in Millersburg and volunteered his time at the HCEF for several years. John Waltman, his attorney and longtime friend, quoted Tom, saying, “Everyone needs some type of training or education and the foundation is good for the people of Holmes County.”

The Layman scholarship will be awarded in 2011 to Holmes County students demonstrating financial need and pursuing higher education in liberal arts, including literature, languages, philosophy, history, mathematics and science. Students may apply for the scholarship by completing the HCEF scholarship application, which is available on the foundation’s website at http://www.hcef.net. The deadline for the HCEF scholarship application is Friday, April 22, at 5 p.m. Current HCEF recipients are not eligible to apply.

Since 1991, the Holmes County Education Foundation has provided more than $5 million to individuals and professionals pursuing higher education. For more information about the HCEF’s scholarship program or other programs, see their website at http://www.hcef.net or call 330-674-7303.
