Commissioners passed a resolution to apply for Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) dollars to replace a bridge on Township Road 652. The resolution streamlines the application process, allowing Young to immediately pursue funding.
Young said he will apply to the OPWC for funds specifically earmarked for emergency repairs.
“Hopefully, (OPWC) will have those available to us,” Young said.
The bridge is a steel pipe arch support structure and measures about 15 and a half feet wide. The bridge was undermined by floodwaters, Young said, and the pipe arch twisted and sank eight feet. The bridge is located in Paint Township, just across the Salt Creek Township line. The road has been closed since Feb. 28.
The current bridge structure was installed in 2000.
“That bridge should have lasted another 20, 30 years,” Young said. “We’re getting price estimates from various contractors right now.”
Young said the total replacement could cost up to $100,000.
At least three bridges in the county were damaged in the Feb. 28 flash floods. A bridge on Township Road 265 has since been repaired, and the engineer’s office is assisting with repairs for a bridge on Port Washington Road in Hardy Township, Young said.
In other business, commissioners approved a notice of commencement for the Ripley Township/Big Prairie sidewalk and drainage improvement project. The project will be completed by contractor Menuez Excavating & Construction.
Commissioners signed off on the 2.712 acre, two-lot Gensa Bottom Subdivision at the request of Henry Miller. The subdivision is located in Walnut Creek Township.
The next business meeting of the Holmes County commissioners will be held Friday, March 11.
