To the Editor:

Based upon what was reported March 16 (Holmes County Pleas for Flow Control) and what was discussed at the recent Millersburg Village Council meeting, everyone agrees the county must properly close the Holmes County dump. Two proposals are on the table. One would close and cap the site as quickly as possible. The other involves expanding the site and bringing in out-of-state waste. The proposal from Kimble, a local company, is to properly close (not expand) the landfill and solve the county’s problem.

The other proposal (from Rumpke) will result in increased costs for residents and businesses, the expansion of an existing environmental problem and may or may not properly close the problem dumpsite at all.

Most troubling of all, the Rumpke proposal could make Holmes County the destination for trash… not tourists… from Ohio and surrounding states. Make no mistake; the impact of this decision will affect the roads, the residents, the farms and businesses across Holmes County for many years to come.

Making a bad problem bigger is a bad idea.
