Infant’s death appears to be shaken baby syndrome

Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death of a 15-month-old Wooster girl.

Capt. Doug Hunter said Friday, April 1, that the child, 15-month-old Ella Young, appears to have died as a result of shaken baby syndrome. Ella died just after midnight at Akron Children’s Hospital, where she was transported by medical helicopter after allegedly suffering injuries at the home of her baby sitter, a 32-year-old Shreve woman.

Hunter said no arrests have been made and the name of the baby sitter is being withheld, pending investigation.

“This is a case where we will present it to the grand jury,” Hunter said. “There is additional evidence that we are awaiting.”

Hunter said Ella was dropped off at the baby sitter’s Monday, March 29, at 8 a.m. At 12:30 p.m., the baby sitter called 911 to report Ella was unresponsive and having trouble breathing.

Ella was transported to Wooster Community Hospital, from where she was flown to Akron Children’s. Staff at Akron Children’s reported Ella showed signs of abuse, Hunter said. Ella died shortly after midnight Tuesday.

A coroner’s ruling indicated the cause of death as shaken baby syndrome.

Hunter said four other children, including Ella’s brother, were at the baby sitter’s residence when the alleged injuries occurred. The children were all under the age of four.
