All students participating were guaranteed at least $1,500 scholarships. Other ACWHCC students who competed were Ashland juniors, Nevin Finley and Ken Robertson; Hillsdale junior, Seth Heldenbrand; and West Holmes junior, Colin Shriver.
Jon Burkholder, automotive technology tech prep teacher, said, “The day went very well and students learned a lot about carburetors, competition and teamwork. Everyone won.” Burkholder, a former career center graduate, has taught there since 1992.
The competition was sponsored by Ohio Technical College, who provided carburetors and a PowerPoint presentation to each participating school for training purposes. Schools can keep these items for training future classes.
Students were required to bring their own tools and the carburetor supplied to the competition. A written test which took 20-30 minutes was required to be done prior to the carburetor assembly heats.
Twenty-two teams competed with scholarships awarded as follows: First place, $5,000 per member; second place, $4,000 per member, and third place, $3,000 per member. All others received $1,500 each.
