Ellen Yoder and her family and friends will present a bake sale which will raise funds for the upcoming Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk-a-thon in Millersburg on Sunday, May 15. The bake sale will feature all kinds of goodies, including cakes and pies, fry pies, angel food cake, bread, cookies and more.
Yoder has plenty of reason to get personally involved with cystic fibrosis, since her son Micah (18) and daughter Bracy (13) both have been inflicted with CF, a disease which attacks the lungs and makes breathing difficult. Yoder said that in addition to the bake sale raising money for the walk and for CF research, it also serves as an opportunity to educate people and make them aware of the disease’s affects on the lives of those who suffer from it.
“We have found that there are a lot of people out there who have heard about CF but really don’t know what it is, and what the effects of it are,” said Yoder. “This is one way that we can help raise money for research and at the same time talk to people about it.”
Two decades ago, the Yoder children would be on the cusp of the extended life expectancy for those with CF, but because of recent advancements in technology and research concerning CF, those suffering from it now are expected to live well into their 40s. Those involved with the Great Strides are hoping that with all of the new advancements being made in research, that they will soon see a drug come through the pipeline which will cure CF forever.
Until then, families like the Yoders will continue to work hard toward creating funding for CF research, since the organization gets no federal aid. And like many families, Yoder’s extended family has readily come to join in the crusade.
“I’ve got a number of family members coming over Friday night and we will fellowship and make a lot of baked items, including the fry pies,” said Yoder. “It’s fun when a group of women get together like that and kind of go at it in the kitchen.”
Not only will there be plenty of tempting baked goods for sale, Micah and Bracy will also be performing along with some of their friends. The two Yoder children both play the piano, and will be playing on the piano on the grandstand in the foyer area where the bake sale is taking place. They will be joined by friends who are accomplished with the violin and flute.
“It’s a fun way to bring attention to what we are doing, and last year we had a lot of older folks come and just sit back and enjoy the music,” said Yoder.
All baked goods may be purchased by donation only, and the bake sale will be available through approximately 3 p.m.
The CF Great Strides Walk-a-thon will be held at the Rails to Trails at the Airport Park in Millersburg behind the Dairy Queen. More information on CF and the event can be seen at http://greatstrides.cff.org.
