HealthPoint has been so successful, in fact, that WCH recently invested in a large-scale expansion of the facility. About 7,000 square feet were added, bringing its total area to 25,000 square feet. “I’m excited that we now have the space to do all the activities that we want to do,” said Brian Coote, director of rehabilitation and health/wellness services. “I think we have an excellent facility. The large glass windows and open design make it feel spacious and light.”
In their new large group studio, HealthPoint offers Zumba, Pilates, Tae Bo, boot camp and other group exercise classes. The studio is equipped with special, springy flooring to make it easier on the body. A new all-inclusive membership option gives unlimited access to these classes as well as the gym and open swim times. “It’s a pretty neat experience—you can go wherever you want each day,” said Mike Stoops, supervisor of health and wellness.
A small group studio with four Kinesis machines was also added. This equipment allows for movement in all planes against resistance and is a good choice for circuit training. Small group training on this equipment is more affordable than personal training but more personal than the larger classes.
People of all ages can benefit from regular exercise. HealthPoint serves many young athletes, affiliating with more than 20 schools and youth organizations to provide sports specific training and conditioning that can improve speed, power, balance and agility and prevent sports-related injuries.
In an effort to make the facility more welcoming to parents with young children, a supervised child watch room with a Wii, Xbox, and other kids’ activities was included in the new addition. A viewing window makes it easy for parents to keep tabs on their children.
For senior citizens, maintaining strength and BMI can improve the quality of life dramatically, Coote said. HealthPoint’s Silver Sneakers program is tailored to the needs of this age group. Many of them enjoy using the 15-foot by 25-foot heated pool. “It’s very therapeutic,” Coote said. “The air temperature is set at 85 degrees and the water temperature at 90 degrees.”
A corporate wellness program is available through HealthPoint as well. Companies can choose from a variety of packages to help improve the health of their employees. These packages include health screenings, lunch and learn sessions, and a variety of wellness programs and events.
Many people are unaware that HealthPoint offers nutritional services, massotherapy and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Two different nutritional counseling programs help clients to manage their weight in a safe, medically supervised way. Using metabolic tools, the staff can determine an individual’s energy requirements and create an appropriate weight management program.
In the occupational therapy area, therapists help clients with hand and wrist injuries, lymphedema, etc. They provide training for factory workers to prevent injury as they lift and carry loads as well as functional capacity evaluations to determine when a client is ready to return to work.
Yet another area of the building is devoted to working with children with ADD, autism and other neurological disorders and developmental delays. Therapists can increase or decrease sensory input in a specially designed room. Speech therapists have their own area as well, with rooms wired for sound where parents can listen in on their child’s progress.
HealthPoint is probably best known for its physical therapy program, which offers rehab after surgery or injury. HealthPoint’s staff of 60 boasts an impressive array of credentials. “What really sets us apart is the skill level of our staff,” said Coote. “We have staff with doctorates in physical therapy, sports certification, orthopedic certification, McKenzie certification, master’s degrees in exercise physiology, and more. You’ll be getting advice from someone who’s an expert in their field.
“Medically based fitness—that’s what we try to hang our hat on. Our degreed staff use sound principles and the latest technology to establish the best program for you. Our mission is to improve the health and wellness of the community one person at a time.”
