Making a grand entrance at Troyer Door

Mark Troyer started a small and seemingly simple business at a home shop in Sugarcreek in 1994. Today, the company has more than 1,000 square feet of showroom space for their doors, both interior and exterior. With plenty of new designs for 2011, including a full line of storm doors, Troyer Door offers maintenance-free service to all of their customers.

Big doors swing on little hinges, so they say. And any home remodeler can tell you, sometimes it’s the little details that can make or break the progress of a project. For example, the opening for a new front door that’s two inches smaller than a standard sized door.

That’s a good time to have a custom door manufacturer in the neighborhood. “Most contractors in remodeling a house think, I’ve got to make this opening a standard size to fit a door,” said Mark Troyer, owner of Troyer Door. “We say, bring us your opening, we’ll fit the door to the opening.”

This way of operating is quite a change from the company’s early days, when the primary business of Troyer Door was reselling steel entrance doors returned to another manufacturer. The company now offers a variety of products and services, but what they don’t do is sell seconds or returned merchandise.

Mark Troyer started a small and seemingly simple business at a home shop in 1994. He bought steel entrance doors that had been returned to the manufacturer, and resold them at a reduced price. Troyer Door quickly gained a reputation as the place to get a great deal on an entrance door. Sales manager Jonas Yoder joined the company about a year later, and together they have built the company to what it is today. But it’s grown far beyond the steel entrance door market.

“Although Troyer Door is most known for their exterior door systems, we also offer a full line of interior doors in maple, cherry, oak, poplar, pine, hickory, knotty pine,” said Troyer. “We also offer custom built wood interior doors. Just draw me a picture, and we’ll get you that. For the customer looking for an odd sized door, it’s often said, if you can’t find it anywhere else, check at Troyer Door.”

The company quickly outgrew its small beginnings, mostly by word of mouth, and moved a mile down the road in 1997. With expansions and additions, they now have more than 1,000 square feet in showroom space, in addition to their warehouse. The showroom is jam packed with steel and fiberglass entrance doors, wood interior doors, and hardware displays.

“New for 2011 is a full line of storm doors, in colors matching the color system used for steel or fiberglass doors,” said Yoder. “In addition, we have quite a few new door styles, glass styles, new hardware styles, and now six stain colors available.” From April 11 to May 15, they are offering a $15 rebate on a limited number of storm doors.

Troyer explained that it’s not uncommon for a customer to take home a special sized door the same day it was ordered, partly because they stock unusual widths such as 24, 34, and 40 inch doors. If the situation requires, they’ve been known to turn out a custom door in less than an hour, a great solution when a door is damaged in a break-in and a replacement is needed immediately. With all components in their warehouse, and all assembly taking place there as well, there’s no long delay of ordering and delivery to get a door from the manufacturer to the customer.

Creating a maintenance free door is a priority for the company. They have a door frame available with a composite base, which, combined with a fiberglass door and aluminum and composite threshold, gives the customer a door with a lifetime warranty against rotting on the bottom. Their customers especially like this for use in a garage, shop, milking parlor, or other areas where the door frame is regularly subjected to a lot of water. With the exterior of the door frame clad in vinyl coated aluminum, it becomes the maintenance free door system that Troyer specializes in.

Troyer and Yoder are clear on their commitment to quality components and construction. Troyer said, “We have a product line built with the most high quality components found on the door market. We offer a heavy guage steel door with a steel edge.” The company prefers that to the wood edge found on some steel doors. In the same way, their fiberglass doors also have the composite edge, rather than the more weather susceptible wood edge.

“We want people to know, if you buy at Troyer Door, it’s maintenance free,” said Troyer
