Herb Day at Local Roots set for May 14

As springtime heralds the beginning of a new growing season, Local Roots Market and Café will showcase the fragrances and flavors of culinary herbs during a special Herb Day celebration.

Herb Day events will take place Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Local Roots, 140 S. Walnut Street, Wooster. Producers will have fresh herbs and potted herb plants available for sale, and shoppers will have the opportunity to taste various herbs and herb recipes as well as learn more about their cultivation.

John Sprankle of Elkridge Farm will offer a hands-on workshop on growing and using culinary herbs. Sprankle sells herbs and other produce at Local Roots and the downtown farmers market and will share herbs from his gardens to smell and taste. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and will have a nominal fee of $3 for Local Roots members and $5 for non-members.

At 1:00 PM, lifelong gardener and herb enthusiast Linda Hershey will talk about scented geraniums. A member of the Wayne County Herb Society for over 25 years, Hershey has enjoyed growing and cooking with this fragrant group of edible flowers and herbs. Samples will be available. This talk is free to the public.

Throughout the day, Viola Hegedus of Viola’s Hungarian Pastry invites shoppers to sit, relax, and enjoy an elegant tea. Offerings will include herbal tisanes as well as tea, pastries, and herb-flavored cheese sandwiches. There is no cost for this activity. Additional food samples will be provided in the market’s demo kitchen as Jennifer McMullen of The Grain Maker demonstrates how to make herbed butter and cheeses along with other seasonal herb-infused dishes.

The market, located at 140 S. Walnut St. in Wooster, is currently open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 PM. Products are arranged by broad categories such as produce, meats, dairy, baked goods, and other items, and within those areas by producer so that shoppers can maintain the connection to the people who grew, raised, or made the food. Everyone is welcome to shop in the market, though the online order system is available to Local Roots members only.

Local Roots will continue its missions of education and community involvement throughout the year, working with other people and organizations in the community.
