As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags or containers called luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while others help to honor and remember those gone too soon. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor.
“I am proud to be part of this ceremony that acknowledges those that have battled cancer in our community,” said Regina Martin, luminaria chair. “As the luminaria light up the night, it is so painfully clear why we are here, and why we need to continue to raise money for cancer research, education, advocacy and service.”
Relay For Life is an 18-24 hour event that brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking or running on the track. Relay For Life begins with a reception to celebrate life for cancer survivors at 4:30 p.m., and a cancer survivors’ lap to begin shortly after 6 p.m.
