Take for instance Rebecca Chamberlain’s discus heave on Thursday, May 19 at the Div. II District track meet at the West Holmes stadium for example.
Chamberlain uncorked a personal best 115-footer, and then could only watch as her excellent heave sailed just inches outside the boundary, which disqualified the throw. While Chamberlain did manage to move on to Regional competition by eventually finishing third, it still irked her that the throw went just wide.
“That would have been my PR (personal record),” lamented Chamberlain, who took it all in stride. “It just had this perfect little curve to it that carried it out of bounds. I knew when I let it go it was a really good throw. That’s OK, though. Hopefully I can get it out there again soon.”
The main goal for most of the competitors on Thursday was simply to survive to run or compete again in the finals on Saturday, May 21. With the top four finishers in each event moving on, the number five is certainly one to avoid.
Moving on to run in the finals of the District meet on Saturday was the West Holmes Lady Knights 4x800 team of sophomore Kendra Martin, and freshmen Carly Woodruff, Kennedy Smith and Paiten Strother, who qualified for Districts in the long jump.
The four young runners produced a winning time in their heat, and set their personal record by carving off three-tenths of a second. Smith said that they know if they want to get to the holy grail of Ohio track meets at the State level, they are going to have to continue to cut their time down every time out.
“We took off three-tenths, and that’s a good time for us, and we are satisfied,” said Smith. “At least it is satisfactory for now, but we know we have to get into the 49s at least to keep moving on down the road. Right now for us, this is about getting better for this year and preparing for down the road. We’re young, and we have plenty of time to get a lot better.”
Luke Morris, who advanced to the finals in the 300-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and the 110-high hurdles, said that despite a very sore knee, he was feeling good about his chances to advance to Regionals and beyond.
“At this point, it is all about moving on,” said Morris. “First, fourth, it doesn’t matter as long as you’re there. First you focus on making the finals, then you worry about the next step. I’ve been running OK times so far, but I think that I am at the point where I can step up my times as the competition gets better and better. Running against better competition just makes me push myself even harder.”
