Thanks to the generous support of the community, the hard work of the committee and the special education teachers and adult service workers in Holmes County, the day went off without a hitch.
Due to the wet field conditions, some last minute changes had to be made. Moore’s Lawn and Garden was quick to respond when Jeff Kinney called requesting a Gator or Kubota to haul children and adults who could not walk the distance to the track from the parking lot. Within half an hour, Moore’s had delivered a Kubota that just fit the occasion. We appreciate their support. Student and adult athletes had a first-class ride, compliments of Moore’s. Thanks to them for their quick response!
Also, many banks and businesses supplied workers for the day, and others provided cash donations, lunches, T-shirts and prizes/ribbons. Rodhe’s IGA Super Center donated lunches for the athletes, and Chuck Nicholson Auto Super Store provided orange T-shirts for the athletes. Thanks, too, to Brittany Miller, WHMS, whose award-winning drawing graced the front of the T-shirts.
Thanks to West Holmes for donating the use of their facility and to Todd Day for being available to meet our needs. Thanks, also, to the West Holmes Middle School Marching Band, directed by Mike Pacula, for performing during the opening ceremonies. Julie Snyder, co-director of student services, and Joe Wengerd, superintendent of East Holmes, provided welcoming remarks. Thanks to Robin Hauenstein, Graphic Publications, for announcing the event, and Mike Healy, who very capably serves as the starter every year!
A special thanks goes out to Bob Boss, First Knox National Bank, who served as the business/community chair for his 11th year. Thanks, also, to other sponsors who continue their support of this very special day: WKLM; West Holmes Athletic Boosters; Fire District #1; Holmes County Chamber of Commerce; First Knox National Bank; Melway Paving; Commercial and Savings Bank; Walnut Creek Foods; Rexam; Steimel Law Office; Village Motors; Myron Stutzman; Smith Dairy; Holmes Cheese Co.; Killbuck Savings Bank; Lynn Hope Industries; and East and West Holmes schools. Thanks to The Hub for the nice article.
What were the chances of having a rain-free day given the spring we have had? But we did, and the athletes, staff, volunteers and families all had a great time! What a wonderful event for Holmes County special athletes!
