Downed tree claims the life of a Wooster man

Holmes County Sheriff Tim Zimmerly reported that his deputies are investigating a one-vehicle motorcycle crash that resulted in the death of a 42-year-old Wooster man, Sunday, June 12, in the afternoon.

Investigation by deputies indicates that Jeffrey W. Michels, 502 N. Walnut St., Wooster, was driving his 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on SR 520 about 2/10 of a mile south of CR 621, near Killbuck. Over the crest of a small hill, a tree had fallen across the entire width of the roadway. As Michels crested the hill, he apparently saw the downed tree and attempted to stop. The motorcycle skidded a short distance and then laid down on its left side, and slid into a tree, ejecting Michels, who was not wearing a helmet.

Michels was transported from the scene by Killbuck EMS to Killbuck School, where a Medflight helicopter had landed. Michels was transported by Medflight to Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounce dead.

Deputies are continuing the investigation pending a ruling on cause of death from the Summit County Coroner, as well as the results of the toxicology reports.
