The Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center ABLE Program has announced the winners of its 2011 Rita and Lisa Sayre ABLE Award of Excellence. The award is given annually to a student, instructor or support staff member who best exemplifies the career efforts of Rita and Lisa Sayre in fulfilling the ideals of the ABLE Program. This year’s winners of the ABLE Award of Excellence are Lizzie Yoder and Judy Watson.

Lizzie Yoder, through the urging of family members, began attending ABLE GED classes at the Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Overcoming many obstacles, Yoder earned her GED diploma and in the process, demonstrated determination and persistence, an eagerness to learn, a constant pleasant demeanor, and a willingness to help others in the ABLE Program. She participated in a College Readiness class conducted by the ACWHCC ABLE Program in conjunction with the University of Akron/Wayne College and is currently involved in the Solutions class at North Central State College in preparation for a postsecondary course of study.

Judy Watson is the second recipient of the 2011 ABLE Award of Excellence. Watson earned her GED diploma in 2009 through the Kroc Center ABLE classes as well, where for the past two years since earning her GED, she has served as a volunteer. Watson is patient, dependable, dedicated, personable and supportive in her work with ABLE students. A valued member of the Ashland County-West Holmes ABLE Program, she serves as an inspirational example to other ABLE students as she helps them work toward earning their GED.

Ruth Blue, veteran ABLE instructor, has announced her retirement effective at the end of June. A retired public school teacher, Blue has been an ABLE instructor at both the Transformation Network and at the Ashland Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. She has helped hundreds of adult students improve their basic literacy skills and prepare for the GED exam. Her love of teaching, her patience with students, her compassionate and caring approach to teaching and her vast background of educational experience have made her an invaluable asset to the Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center ABLE Program. She will be missed by her students for whom she has been a friend and counselor, motivator and mentor; she will be missed by her ABLE colleagues who have known her to be a wonderful example of someone who has tirelessly worked to improve the lives of all around her.
