The Norma Johnson Center (NJC) will once again host a butterfly exhibit, starting July 18 and continuing through July 31. Through the sponsorship of the O’Donnell Family Charitable Foundation, the exhibit will be open for two weeks this year. The exhibit will be held in the picnic shelter located on Conservation Drive, off Old SR 39, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Fran LeMaster’s traveling butterfly exhibit by All A Flutter has been a huge hit at the center for the last couple of years. This free exhibit allows visitors to step inside the enclosure and view several native Ohio butterflies up close and personal. Chrysalis will also be on display and hatching throughout the week inside the exhibit. For a fee, visitors can purchase certain crafts, monarch chrysalis and food throughout the week. Donations will be accepted to support the NJC mission of promoting the conservation and preservation of natural resources through education, community outreach and personal experience. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Programs for children during the exhibit will be held on Tuesdays (Interacting with Nature) and Thursdays (crafts), from 10 a.m. to noon. A fee will be charged. On Tuesday, July 19, the program will be on the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly and how the butterfly functions. Participants will then take a hike to try and locate monarch eggs at the NJC. On Tuesday, July 26, the topic will be Moths: What’s the Difference. On Thursday, July 21, a special butterfly craft that children can make and take home with them will be offered. On July 28, participants will make a garden stone at the yellow pole barn. To help with staffing, anyone participating in the children’s program is asked to call the office at 330-339-7976 and register for the nature or craft program.

The Norma Johnson Center is located on SR 39, three miles west of I-77, Dover Exit 83, and six miles east of Sugarcreek. Inquiries about the exhibit can be made by calling the Tuscarawas SWCD office at 330-339-7976.
