NSB’s Back to School Bash proves you can get something for nothing
In today’s world, it is said that when something seems too good to be true, it usually is. It is also believed that you can never get something for nothing.
The church congregation at Northside Baptist Church is set to prove both of those age-old adages incorrect.
For the fourth year running, the Millersburg church will be helping local students get their upcoming school year off and running on the right foot by presenting the NSB Back to School Bash. This year’s event will take place at Spare Time Lanes on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 2-5 p.m., and not only will there be plenty of freebies being given away, there will be some inexpensive activities on the allies too.
As has always been the case, the church has ponied up donations to purchase cartons, boxes and bushels full of school supplies, ranging from pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, notebooks, crayons, markers, glue and other school essentials, to a large amount of lovingly used clothing, which will range from pre-school to high school ages.
As for the bowling, for youth, everything there will be $25 cents, including shoe rentals, games of bowling, pop, chips and snacks, while adults will be charged $1.
However, as for the school supplies, it is all 100 percent free, with no strings attached.
In past years, the event has seen upwards of 200 people attend, and the lives that have been touched has been inspirational and humbling for the church members.
“One of the nice things about this is that it gives families a chance to obtain a lot of these school supplies when they may not otherwise be able to afford it,“ said Taylor Beachy. “The other great thing is that it allows us an opportunity to get to know many of the people in our neighborhood, in Millersburg and around the area.”
So what this event has turned into over the past several years is one which creates plenty of smiling, laughing kids and happy parents.
While the fun and giveaways are a large part of the day, much of the focus on this endeavor is devoted to outreach, which the church has been heavily pursuing over the past couple of years.
The church congregation has devoted itself to meeting the needs of people in little, significant ways by providing families with everyday items.
Whether it’s giving away 5,500 popsicles during the heat of the fair, thousands of light bulbs, 9-volt batteries for smoke detectors, or helping to pay a little bit at the gas pump, the church has made a commitment to providing for area families right where they are.
The church has even adopted a slogan — “Jesus loves you with no strings attached” — which sums up their focus.
“It’s small things being done in great love that can change the world, beginning right here in our on community,” said Pastor Todd Hartley. “Jesus told us to go — don’t wait for people to come to us — and be an outreach. Our mission field starts right here. We may be a small congregation, but we can still do great things for God.”
In following God’s prompting, the immediate, physical needs being met are obvious. The further-reaching spiritual needs? Those are the needs that often go unrecognized until down the road.
For the church members, this day is all about planting seeds and touching lives in ways that God can use.
The Back to School Bash is open to anyone, and the church is currently looking for donations from area businesses who would like to help purchase even more school supplies.
