A son of the late Howard S. and Hazel M. Zinkon, Jack was born July 21, 1928, in New Bedford. He entered into the U.S. Army in 1952, where he served in the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. In addition to being a phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather, Jack was a very active leader in the Baltic community, which he loved, for many years.
Jack was a member of First United Church of Christ, Baltic, and was active in the local Democratic Party as the representative of Baltic on the Democratic Central Committee for 36 years. He served as the Baltic village clerk-treasurer for two terms and was elected to serve on the Baltic Council in the late 1980s, where he continued to serve for 12 years. He was the mayor of Baltic from 1999-2008. Jack was a member of the Tri-County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC), where he served over 20 years as the secretary and was on the board of directors, and served on the executive committee of the Tuscarawas County Regional Planning Commission.
Jack owned and operated Zinkon’s Barber Shop, Baltic, until 1966, when he was appointed postmaster of Baltic. He served in this position until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure in the post office he served eight years, both as president and chairman, of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS) for District 9 (Zanesville District) and was also the District 9 representative for NAPUS at the legislative conferences in Washington, D.C., three different years.
Jack was a life member of the Baltic American Legion Richard Regula Post 679. During his time he served as adjutant for 11 years and finance officer for 20 years. He marched with the Legion Color Guard and participated in the Baltic Memorial Day Services for many years and even served as the master of ceremonies. He was a member of the Baltic Lions Club, serving three years as president and two as treasurer, as well as Masonic Lodge 602, West Lafayette, the Scottish Rite of Canton, the Tri-City Scottish-Rite Club, and the Baltic Flight of the Civil Air Patrol. He was a life member of the Baltic Conservation Club and was active in the Garaway Pirate Booster Club from 1969-75. He served on the Garaway School Board from 1970-73 and was president from 1972-73. In his spare time, Jack enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and being outside doing lawn work.
Surviving are two granddaughters, Emily Zinkon of Baltic and Amanda Zinkon of Stow; a nephew, Dennis Zinkon of Crystal Springs, Fla.; and a host of long-time friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Zinkon, whom he married August 9, 1948; daughters, Lana Sue and Jacalyn Zinkon; sister, Patricia Denney; brother, Donald Zinkon; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Rinner and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Zinkon.
His granddaughters would like to say a special thank you to the nurses, aides, and staff at Hospice of Holmes County for all the compassion and wonderful care given to Jack in his final days. Also, to the wonderful community of Baltic, thank you all for the love, support, and expressions of sympathy over the last 10 months.
Services will be held August 9, at 11 a.m., at Zion First United Church of Christ, Baltic. Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery, where the American Legion will conduct military graveside honors. Calling hours will be August 8, from 5-8 p.m., at Smith-Varns Funeral Home, Sugarcreek.
