Two injured in Sunday buggy crash

A Millersburg couple were injured in a Sunday, August 21 buggy vs. truck crash on state Route 39.

Enos A. Byler, 76, and Katie Byler, 71, both of Township Road 257, were injured after their buggy was rear-ended by a 1995 Ford truck driven by Owen J. Beachy III, County Road 19, Coshocton.

According to Holmes County Sheriff’s Capt. Dale Renker, the Bylers and Beachy were traveling westbound on state Route 39 at 7:52 p.m. between township roads 258 and 257. Beachy came around a curve and struck the rear of the buggy, sending it off the right side of the road where it came to rest on a fence.

Enos and Katie were both ejected from the buggy and transported to Akron General Hospital. Katie is listed in serious condition in the hospital’s surgical intensive care unit and Enos is listed in serious condition.

Beachy was not injured in the crash. Renker said Beachy told deputies investigating the crash that the sun was in his eyes and he did not see the buggy in time to stop.

No citations have been issued and the crash remains under investigation.
