Mildred Whitmer

Mildred Whitmer, 93, of Winesburg, died Sept. 23, 2011, at Walnut Hills Nursing Home, Walnut Creek, following a period of declining health.

Mildred was born Nov. 6, 1917, in Winesburg, to the late Jacob and Alma Horrisberger. She taught at Peters School, a one-room school house near Winesburg. Along with her husband, she owned and operated Whitmer’s General Store, Winesburg, for many years. She was a member of Zion Reformed Church, Winesburg, and the Winesburg Historical Society.

Surviving are children, Sue (Maurice) Cancasci of Mason, David Whitmer of Strasburg, and John Whitmer and Jane Whitmer, both of Winesburg; son-in-law, Richard Leech of Painesville; four grandchildren, Julie (Kraig) McConaghy of Maineville, Tom (Diana) Leech of Lakeland, Fla., Carrie (Steve) Heim of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Amanda (Adrian) Mattson of Jerome, Mich.; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde R. Whitmer, whom she married June 7, 1941; and daughter, Ann Leech.

Services will be held Sept. 26, at 11 a.m., at Zion Reformed Church, with Pastor Jason Strong officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery, Winesburg. Friends may call Sept. 25, from 2-4 p.m., at Spidell Funeral Home, Mt. Eaton, or one hour prior to services at the church.
