OK, I admit I’ve done a lot of discriminating. During my 25 years of supervising as many as 55 employees at a time and the hiring of many of them, I discriminated against the irresponsible, the loafers, the arrogant, the unqualified college graduates, the liars, the ones that were after a free ride, since their union membership would grant them the right to say “that’s not in my job description,” the right to make no attempt to better serve their employer, but still keep their position and the right to make it more difficult for an employee with ambition, but less seniority, to advance to positions they were capable of. I say this from my personal experience of being forced into the union for my first 20 years with this employer.
These descriptions could go on and on, but I want to describe the employees I did hire: Black, White, Female, Male, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Mexican (all legal of course). After several years of my hiring practice, my superior informed me that I had the best record of hiring the best employee the first time of all Department Heads. Since the Union had no influence over my hires, I had to be right the first time.
In my opinion, it would appear many people actually believe their paycheck comes from the Union, rather than their Employer. The tactics I personally experienced to get SB5 on the ballot took place in front of Elder-Beerman, Wooster. In the public parking lot, a young man requesting signatures regarding SB5 approached others and me. When I informed him of my approval of SB5, he said “oh, this is to keep it OFF the ballot”, as I attempted to read the ultra fine, poor copy, print on several pages. He impatiently came back twice for the clipboard, until I read enough to know it was to put SB5 ON the ballot. I then handed it back and said, “no thank you” and he quickly disappeared.
My opinion is, with Governor Kasich’s direction and leadership combined with a small cut in the Union’s massive control, Ohio could have the experience I had. Let’s pull back the Union’s claws enough to at least partially undo the financial harm that has been done to Ohio’s pocket book, so we can keep a little more in ours.
Please Support and vote Yes on Issue 2/SB5.
