A community rally is going to be held at Hiland on Saturday Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, and the list of activities will be enough to keep families busy the entire time.
If it’s activity you seek, then participate in some of the fun activities provided, including a ping-pong tournament in the high school gymnasium. No preregistration is needed, just show up and see how you stack up with the competition.
If that’s not your thing, maybe you’ll want to join the cornhole tournament. Again, there will be no preregistration required, and the games will take place in the halls or outside if weather permits.
For some sit-down action that is just as exciting, join in a spirited game of Dutch Blitz, Holmes County’s official card game. The games will be played with standard and large, oversized cards in the high school cafeteria.
“Our goal is complete and utter passage of the school levy,” said East Holmes superintendent Joe Edinger with a laugh. “Seriously, we just wanted to have a fun community rally to bring people together, and to maybe answer some questions people may have about the levy. We have had a lot of people working hard on the levy, and we wanted to make a relaxing time when we could get together and have a good time. We struggled with what to even call the event, but once we settled on community rally, it kind of gave it a purpose and summed up what we wanted to achieve.”
Edinger said that the hope is that the diversity of the different events would draw different crowds of people from all over East Holmes.
While the action is going on in the gymnasium and cafeteria, the concession stand will be open, providing movie snacks for some high quality viewing, which should interest anyone who has a love of East Holmes sports. The movie selection for the event, which will be presented via the brand new projector system donated to the school from the Class of 1961, will include a documentary on Perry Reese and the highlight film from the boys state championship game this past season.
“The Perry Reese DVD is a compilation of news stories gathered together over the years about Perry, and we figured that there were a decent amount of people in the area who didn’t get to see the State tournament final, and even those who did get to see it may well want to live it again,” said Edinger. “Even though we know the outcome, it is still exciting to see it happen all over again.”
Down at the Reese Center, there will be plenty of action going on, as players from the East Holmes biddy ball program will be playing basketball games.
And while you’re visiting for the morning, why not get your car sparkling clean? Drop off your vehicle at the bus garage for the car wash, where Hiland staff and student volunteers will be in the bus garage area cleaning vehicles. All donations will go into the Citizens for East Holmes fund.
In addition to the fun, there will also be levy information available in the main lobby, and people to answer any question the public may have concerning the levy and where the levy money will go.
“It’s not too much of a secret agenda that we want to spread the word about the need to support this levy,” said Edinger. “We wanted to take this opportunity to answer questions and inform people about the various needs within the district. We’ve worked hard to get the word out about the needs we are facing, but there are still people out there with questions and concerns, and we want to be able to help them understand what the plans are for the levy.”
