The accident took place around 8:40 p.m. on Route 39 between Berlin and Walnut Creek, about one-half mile east of County Road 135 in Walnut Creek Township.
According to Holmes County Sheriff Tim Zimmerly, John C. Yoder, 3939 Township Road 162, Sugarcreek, driving a 2005 Buick Rendezvous, was attempting to enter traffic on SR 39 from a private driveway, and pulled into the path of a 1993 Peterbilt semi-tractor truck hauling a milk tanker, driven by 47-year-old James F. Denny Jr., 2637 SR 179, Lakeville. Denny was heading westbound at the time of the accident.
Yoder was transported from the scene to Akron General Hospital by MedFlight, where he is currently in surgical intensive care. Denny was not injured in the crash.
Cameron Miller, who witnessed the crash as he was heading eastbound on SR 39, said of the accident, “The driver of the SUV just pulled right out in front of the truck. There was nowhere for him to go, no way for him to avoid it. He hit right in the passenger’s side door.”
The accident closed down a one mile portion of SR 39 for more than one hour. Both vehicles had to be towed from the crash site. As of press time the crash is still under investigation.
