180 degrees of separation

Regan Miller’s defense, where she has recorded 14 steals through four games, is part of the Lady Hawks early season success.

Last season, Hiland traveled to Tuscarawas Central Catholic and saw themselves flailing away in an 18-point deficit after the first 10 minutes of play.

The Lady Hawks would rebound to win that game in close fashion, but it was the way they had put themselves in that hole that was discouraging to head coach Dave Schlabach.

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the Lady Hawks again made the trip to New Philadelphia to take on the Saints, only this time around, Hiland did a complete 180-degree turn, taking a 19-1 lead after one quarter. But this time, there would be no comebacks, as Hiland continued to pour it on over the stunned Saints.

The 18-point lead grew to 35 at the half, with Hiland leading 40-5. A 21-point third quarter pushed the lead to 61-14 after three quarters, and the two teams played out the string, Hiland continuing its dominant ways, the Lady Hawks exhibiting a ferocious defense, which eventually led to a 73-16 victory in a contest which Schlabach felt his team could easily have lost coming into the game.

“We came out and played well,” said Schlabach of the Lady Hawks’ 18-1 opening quarter. Our full-court pressure really did them in. They struggled to get the ball over half court and I thought our kids did a nice job on the defensive end, and that turned into a lot of easy points for us on the offensive side.”

While it is easy to look at the box score in a 57-point game and add up the scoring column, a closer inspection of the peripheral numbers shows just how lopsided this one was.

Hiland exasperated TCC into 31 turnovers, collected 31 steals, and held the Saints to only 24 shots compared to their 71. Hiland corralled a whopping 27 rebounds compared to TCC’s five, the points scored off turnovers margin in favor of the Lady Hawks, a mind-boggling 47-2.

It was one of those games in which Hiland could do no wrong, the Saints could do no right.

McKenzie Miller led the way for Hiland, popping in 14 points with a pair of 3-pointers. She was joined in double figures by Kendra Schlabach and Regan Miller, both of whom scored 10. Miller continued her thieving ways, collecting six more steals, making it 15 in the season’s first three games. In addition, she finished off a very balanced game with seven rebounds and seven assists.

Jasmine Goings continued her solid play off the bench, scoring nine points and grabbing six rebounds. Natalie Nikol also provided nice play off the bench, producing six points and four boards, while Regina Hochstetler recorded nine points and six steals. Bria Coil scored five points and grabbed seven rebounds and Emily Yoder chipped in six points.

Courtney Standiford was the lone Saints player to have any kind of positive impact, scoring eight points and hauling in five rebounds.
