Levy, income tax on March 6 ballot

Millersburg and the East Holmes School District will be asking voters for new money in a March 6 ballot that features one contested primary race.

After defeats in the Nov. 8 election, Millersburg will be back with a one half of one percent income tax and East Holmes will seek a 3.77 mill levy. The East Holmes levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $118.76 per year.

East Holmes will further place a five-year, 1 mill renewal levy on the ballot. Because it is a renewal, property owners will not see an increase in taxes because of the levy.

Triway Local School District will seek a .75 percent income tax levy.

In what is shaping up to be the only contested race for a county office in 2012, Millersburg resident Gary L. Grice will contest incumbent Raymond Eyler for his seat on the board of the Holmes County commissioners.

Incumbent Republicans fill out the remainder of county office seats. No Democratic challengers filed for the primary race, said Mary Schaffer, Holmes County Board of Elections deputy director.

Barring independent challengers, the March 6 primary will establish the county’s slate of elected officials. The deadline for independent candidates to file is March 5.

The Democratic Central Committee candidates will also appear on the March 6 ballot. Of 19 precincts, only six have candidates filed.

Also on the March 6 ballot are two requests by Jake’s of Berlin, 5234 County Road 201, Millersburg, the first for on-premise sale of beer, wine, and mixed beverages, and the second for Sunday sales.

Running unopposed in the primary are: Commissioner, Joe D. Miller; Prosecuting Attorney, Steve Knowling; Clerk of Courts, Ronda P. Steimel; Sheriff, Timothy W. Zimmerly; Recorder, Anita Hall; Treasurer, Joyce L. Yoder; Engineer, Christopher R. Young; Coroner, Richard J. Anthony.

Democratic Central Committee candidates are: Millersburg East, Marjorie Riggle; Millersburg West, Harold Tidball Jr.; Killbuck Township, Ann E. Stotler; Knox Township, Pat Walton; Mechanic Precinct, James L. Schafer; Beck’s Mills, Nancy K. Brenly.

The ballot will be certified Dec. 12. The filing deadline for the March 6 ballot was 4 p.m. Dec. 7.
