Recently, Dr. Michael Mulcahy joined the practice of his brother, Dr. Richard Mulcahy. Now, the brothers use almost 50 years of combined experience and extensive training in spinal decompression to offer a non-surgical remedy to chronic pain.
The brothers continue a legacy of chiropractic excellence. In 1962, their father opened his first chiropractic office out of his farmhouse. A generation later, four out of the five sons are practicing chiropractors. Drs. Richard and Michael Mulcahy ultimately found their niche in spinal rejuvenation with an emphasis on spinal decompression and cold laser therapy.
Spinal decompression gives patients an option besides invasive surgery and pain medication, explained Dr. Richard Mulcahy. “Spinal decompression is a non-chiropractic, non-surgical therapy focused primarily on fixing disc herniations and neurological compression related to the spine,” he said.
Because spinal decompression is so effective, the doctors accept the most challenging cases. “We want patients who are serious, chronic cases. A lot of people who come to us are facing surgery and they don’t know where else to turn,” said Dr. Michael Mulcahy.
In fact, the procedure has an 85 percent success rate, making spinal decompression the logical choice for those in search of a real solution for back and leg pain. And while The Spinal Rejuvenation & Laser Healing Center doesn’t accept health insurance, there is financing available.
This therapy is typically done three times a week, 20 minutes a visit for 20 visits, depending on the condition of the patients. The decompression process involves gently stretching the spine, creating a vacuum in the joint into which fluid can flow. This allows for the regeneration of cells and eventually the rejuvenation of the spine, explained Dr. Richard Mulcahy.
The brothers also specialize in biophotostimulation, more commonly known as cold laser therapy. According to Dr. Richard Mulcahy, research has shown that cold laser therapy can accelerate healing three to five times as fast as normal healing tissue on its own. This technology has been tested for 40 years, has had more than 2,000 papers published on it and has been shown to aid in damaged tissue regeneration while decreasing inflammation, relieving pain and boosting the immune system.
The doctors, who offer cold laser therapy in addition to their treatment package, urge patients to consider it. “Cold laser works for every part of the body to heal and reduce pain. A lot of people have heard about it but don’t know much about it. We can answer those questions.”
As word spreads about these successful treatments, Dr. Richard Mulcahy’s practice has tripled in business in less than a year. The doctor recognized a community in need when he moved to this location in the heart of Amish Country.
“I had to make changes to meet the need in this county and to give people another option besides surgery,” he said. He expanded his practice, adding more spinal decompression tables and bringing in his brother, a certified spinal decompressionist with 29 years of experience, to help handle the growth.
Now, nearly 95 percent of the patients are Amish, a number the Mulcahys attribute to the nature of their methods.
“The Amish have very holistic beliefs. They are anti-surgery and anti-medical. [Spinal decompression] is a wonderful natural treatment option to offer when surgery is not an option,” said Dr. Richard Mulcahy.
The buggy friendly office offers hitching posts, easy access from the Holmes County Trail and flexible hours. Mulcahy also has plans to construct four kitchenette cabins for out-of-town visitors.
The Spinal Rejuvenation & Laser Healing Center is located at 788 East Jackson St. in Millersburg. Dec. 19-20, patients can get a complete spinal decompression examination for $35. Call 330-473-6013 to schedule an appointment today.
