So how do we live in the fullness of Jesus? I believe wholeheartedly that the first step is knowledge or knowing what we have been given. God has given us so much through his Son in addition to being able to go to heaven when we die. They are all free gifts that are ours for the taking, but what good does it do us if we don’t even know he has purchased these gifts for us?
You can’t receive something if you don’t know it has been given to you, so the first thing we need to know is what we have been given or what has been made available to us by his unmerited favor or grace. If you read last week’s article, that was just a little taste of what some of these gifts are. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Lack of knowledge of what Jesus has purchased for us all can literally destroy us, so knowing what Jesus has purchased for us is in the uttermost importance.
In a previous article I talked about 2 Peter 3:3, which says, “As his divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness,” so Jesus’ power living in us has already given to us all that we need, but both the previous verse and the end of that very verse emphasize us needing to know what we have been given.
2 Peter 2:2 says, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” The end of verse three goes on to say, “Through the knowledge of him who called us by glory and virtue.” Do you see how knowledge is mentioned in each of those verses? Do you want God’s grace multiplied in your life? Then we first need to get knowledge of what we have already been given through Jesus. Verse four goes on to say, “By which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” God has given us amazing promises through Jesus, and when we learn what we have been given, we can partake of the divine nature of our Savior that lives in us, enabling us to live in the victory he purchased for us.
So the first step is hearing and knowing what has been made available to us. The next step is taking that “head knowledge” I will call it and meditating on it until it becomes truth deep within you. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” It is fairly easy to get head knowledge on something, but getting that deep understanding so that we know that we know takes some effort on our part. Meditating on the Word, chewing on it and speaking it is a key to allowing the truth of it to come alive inside of us. Remember, the Word of God is “living and powerful,” not just some normal words written on a page. They are the very words of God to us.
Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
The world will try to pull you away from God and conform you to its image, but we can avoid that by renewing our minds to what the Word says. Having knowledge of what the Word says and the promises that came to us through Jesus and meditating on that can literally transform your life.
One thing I know: far too much of my Christian life was lived not having a clue to the extent of what Jesus purchased for me on the cross. As a whole we as the body of Christ are living in just a small segment of what Jesus died for us to have, so first we need to know what we have been given, which I have tried to reveal through this series, and that leads us to the next key to walking in the fullness of Christ that I will touch on in my next article. Stay tuned.
