There are ways to stop annoying robocalls

It seems like every day the number of unwanted phone calls we receive is just growing. One reason for this increase is the use of internet-powered phone systems that make it cheap and easy for scammers to make illegal sales robocalls from anywhere in the world.

A robocall is an automated telephone call that delivers a recorded message. These types of calls also allow the whereabouts of the caller to remain hidden by displaying fake caller ID information.

So what can we do to stop those calls? One option is a robocall-blocking app for your mobile phone.

According to a recent Federal Trade Commission article, robocall-blocking apps can give you the ability to do things like prescreen your calls before the phone rings, block certain types of calls including calls that others have flagged as fraudulent or unwanted calls, block anonymous calls that show up as “Unknown” callers, and use reverse lookup to detect fake caller ID information from call spoofing.

When choosing which app to use, we need to consider our phone’s operating system. Before deciding which app to download, think about the call protection you need and then do your research. One place to start is with CTIA, a trade association representing manufacturers and providers of wireless products and services. Their website at www.ctia.org/consumer-tips/robocalls has a comprehensive list of call blocking apps to help guide us.

National Do Not Call Registry: If your phone numbers are not already on the National Do Not Call Registry, it is a good idea to add them. If you continue to get sales calls, at least you will know the callers don’t respect the law.

Report robocalls: If you continue to get illegal robocalls or other unwanted calls, report them to the FTC at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov. Your complaints not only help them target scammers, but also help telecommunications carriers and other industry partners that are working on call blocking solutions. Your reporting also helps law enforcement agencies go after the scammers behind them.

Other options to stop unwanted calls: Besides the mobile phone apps, there are other options we have to block unwanted calls. Options include features built into your phone, cloud-based services, call-blocking devices and services provided by your phone-service carrier. For more information on these, go to www.consumer.ftc.gov and search for Blocking Unwanted Calls.
