Chipotle fundraiser benefits Starlight

Starlight School is recognized as a 2017 Gold Recognition Award winner through the Ohio Department of Education.

Starlight School recently celebrated its Gold Award achievement. This award recognized the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports team for its excellence. Out of 108 schools recognized, only seven earned Gold Awards.  
 
For the day of celebration, many students and staff wore gold outfits and accessories, the school hallways were adorned with gold stars, gold crafts were made and a kickball tournament was played by all.
 
All students at Starlight School participate in the PBIS program, which involves teaching students expected behaviors in a consistent and positive way, modeling and acknowledging those behaviors, and helping all students meet expectations to be successful.
 
Starlight School and the PBIS team also will be the beneficiary of a fundraiser on Feb. 12. Dine-in or carryout dinner from 4-8 p.m. at Chipotle, 135 Bluebell Drive SW in New Philadelphia, will support the PBIS program. Tell the cashier you're supporting the cause to make sure 50 percent of the proceeds are donated to the PBIS store program, where kids can reap the benefits of their hard work by earning and spending PBIS Dollars.
 
Shopping is just one part of the PBIS program. When students meet goals, they receive PBIS Dollars from the mascot, Lego Man. These dollars can be spent one time per month at the store, which is set up by the staff with items that have been donated.
 
During the shopping event, children get to have fun while learning about dollars and cents. Not only do they count and spend money, they also run the register. After shopping, the children then get to participate in a special activity.
 
“The program is really a win-win for students and staff because as the students are meeting their desired goals, they are simultaneously learning new skills that the team is modeling for them while having a blast doing it,” said Holly Lawver, Starlight School’s principal.
 
This program is funded primarily through donations, and all funds that are raised from the Chipotle Dine to Donate event will be used to purchase items for the PBIS store and special activities.
